In 2018, Tahlequah carried her dead newborn calf for 17 days in a show of grief that was echoed around the world. I, alongside many mothers around the world ached for her. After nearly a dozen years of working to contribute to the stabilization of the climate and biosphere, something inside of me broke in 2018. Between the wildfires and Tahlequah, I was devastated.
However, like all of my work, this painting is not about that grief - it’s a celebration of what we have here and now and what we can act to save if we act fast. In 2020, Tahlequah gave birth to another baby, who now swims alongside her mother in the Salish Sea.
This original painting is 40” by 30”.
